Privacy policy

Julia is an installable web app (PWA) that lets you write your own book by talking. This Privacy Policy explains which personal data we process when you use our public website and the author app, for what purpose, on what legal basis, with whom we share it, and what rights you have over it.

The data controller is the Julia team. For any matter related to your personal data you can write to the email address listed in the contact section of this policy. We are committed to processing your information lawfully, fairly, and transparently.

We collect only the data needed to provide the service. Depending on how you use Julia, we process the following categories of personal data:

• Identity data: the name or alias you choose to display as an author on your account.
• Contact data: your mobile phone number, which you use to sign up and verify your identity through a one-time code sent by SMS. If you write to us through the contact form, also your email address and the message you send us.
• Payment data: when you purchase a plan, payment is processed through Stripe. Julia does not store your full card number; we only keep non-sensitive references such as the last four digits, the card brand, your Stripe customer identifier, and your subscription status.
• Your work's content: the recordings you dictate, their transcripts, the generated manuscript, the synopsis, the cover, and the exports. The specific treatment of voice recordings is detailed in the Audio data policy.
• Technical and usage data: minimal information generated by the operation of the service, such as access logs, storage space consumption, and diagnostic data needed for security and maintenance.

We do not deliberately collect special categories of data. You are responsible for the content you choose to dictate; we ask you not to include sensitive information about others without their consent.

We process your personal data for the following purposes:

• Creating and managing your account, authenticating you securely by phone and SMS code, and ensuring that a given number stays tied to a single role.
• Providing the core service: storing your recordings, transcribing them into text, and drafting your manuscript using artificial intelligence.
• Managing your subscription, processing payments, applying the free trial, and controlling the storage space you have purchased.
• Sending you necessary transactional communications, such as confirmations, notices about your subscription status, or replies to your inquiries.
• Keeping the service secure, preventing fraud and abuse, and complying with our legal obligations.

We do not use your content to train third-party artificial intelligence models, nor do we sell it for commercial purposes.

The processing of your data relies on the following legal bases:

• Performance of a contract: the processing needed to provide the service you request when you create your account and use Julia, including managing your subscription.
• Consent: for accessing your device's microphone and camera, and for processing your voice recordings. You can withdraw your consent at any time.
• Legitimate interest: to keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and improve how the platform works, always in a proportionate manner.
• Compliance with legal obligations: when we must retain or disclose data as required by applicable law.

To provide the service we share certain data with providers acting as data processors, subject to confidentiality and security obligations. The main ones are:

• Firebase (Google): user authentication, database, and cloud storage for your books, recordings, transcripts, covers, and exports. Access to these files is restricted exclusively to their owner.
• Stripe: payment processing and subscription management. Stripe handles your card data under its own policies and security standards (PCI DSS).
• Anthropic (Claude API): transcription of your recordings into text and drafting of your manuscript. Content is processed to generate the result you request and is not used to train third-party models.
• Resend: sending transactional emails related to your account and your inquiries.

Some of these providers may process data on servers located outside your country. In those cases, international transfers are covered by the appropriate safeguards provided for by applicable law. We do not share your data with third parties for advertising purposes.

• We keep your account data and your work's content for as long as your account remains active and it is needed to provide the service.
• If you delete your account, we delete your books, recordings, transcripts, covers, and exports in cascade; this action is irreversible.
• Billing data and payment references are kept for the period required by applicable commercial and tax law, even after you cancel your subscription.
• Security logs and data needed to meet legal obligations are kept only for as long as strictly necessary.

As the owner of your personal data, you can exercise the following rights at any time:

• Access: knowing which personal data we process about you.
• Rectification: correcting inaccurate or incomplete data, for example your author name from your account settings.
• Erasure: requesting the deletion of your data. You can permanently delete your account from the author app itself, which deletes all your content in cascade.
• Objection and restriction: objecting to certain processing or requesting that it be restricted.
• Portability: exporting your manuscript as a PDF or as the KDP package to take it with you.
• Withdrawing consent: revoking microphone and camera permissions at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

To exercise these rights you can use the options available in the app or write to our contact email. We will handle your request within the period required by applicable law. If you believe we have not handled your request properly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent data protection authority.

We apply technical and organizational measures to protect your data against unauthorized access, loss, or alteration. Among others:

• Encryption of communications using TLS across the entire service.
• Strict per-owner isolation: every recording, transcript, cover, and export belongs exclusively to the author who created it, and only they can access its content.
• Passwordless authentication through a one-time code sent by SMS, with session revocation when appropriate.
• Secrets and API keys managed in a secure vault, never exposed to the client's browser.

No system is infallible; if we detected a security breach affecting your data, we would act in accordance with applicable law and inform you when required.

Voice recordings are the core material Julia uses to build your book and receive specific treatment due to their nature. Microphone capture, resumable uploads to storage, transcription through the Claude API (Anthropic), and owner-restricted access are described in detail in our Audio data policy.

We may update this Privacy Policy for legal or technical reasons, or as the service evolves. When changes are substantial, we will notify you through reasonable means. The last-updated date at the top indicates the current version; continued use of Julia after it takes effect implies that you are aware of it.
